KA movie subtitles

Postby gammersempai » Tue Oct 23, 2018 11:23 pm

My video editors won't open the .mve format.
Is there a way to convert them to a standard format then back?

VLC used to be able to open them and maybe convert them but if that is not the case there is a tool that will convert it to AVI, BMP or GIF - Download MVE2AVI here. I did try a quick test on this and it seems to be broken on Windows 10 x64 due to a DirectX error, might be worth trying it on older versions. There is also a 3rd party tool to do the reverse Download AVI2MVE here, never tried this though.

Now as for making an MVE file the Interplay way..... when you make an MVE file you need each frame as a TGA image file and I think a WAV soundtrack. I don't have full details on this to hand at the moment but I will try to get back to you. The actual Interplay tool used to make the KA movies is in the Modding Tools downloads section, they never had a tool to convert MVE back to a standard format as far as I know.

Speaking of subtitles, I have not actually installed SFA to check but I think it might have been SFA that gave me the idea there was a subtitles option in KA. If you look in an SFA CD's Movies directory you see some files like the one below, I'm not even sure these are used in SFA but if they are the mechanism could still exist in KA.... on my to check list lol.

EDIT: SFA does have a subtitles option in the audio settings and it does work, it would be interesting to see if this could be made to work in KA.

25:Good afternoon, Crew.
69:I asked you all to meet me here so we could get acquainted.
116:Did everyone get a drink?
148:
161:Any chance of something stronger?
188:Not on my salary.
217:So, ah...
232:
240:You... you want to sit down?
293:
571:So, what did you think of Rotherot's speech today?
655:Well, I didn't agree with Rotherot.
681:I mean, you can't invent a rule for every situation!
722:Perhaps not. But statistically speaking, the current
756:Starfleet regulations have brought the Federation
785:unprecedented success.
809:I don't think we have a choice here.
834:If we don't follow the estabilished procedures,
860:we simply invite chaos.
883:Starfleet's not perfect, Jana, and neither are the regs.
930:Perhaps not, but I didn't apply to Starfleet because
961:I thought I knew better than the best
978:minds in the Federation!
1000:Well, maybe you didn't, but I know
1021:I have something to offer Starfleet.
1061:What got you into Starfleet, Corin?
1100:I bought my way in.
1130:Hey, don't look so surprised!
1158:There's a two for one sale on shuttle craft today.
1207:Look, Corin! This may be a joke to you,
1229:but it is a privilege to be here at Starfleet!
1251:I worked hard to get here!
1287:So, Jana, how did you get here anyway?
1315:Stealing the local shuttle, just hitching
1343:a ride on your garbage scow?

I was going to put subtitles in the movies for KA and need to be able to import the .mve file into Power Director 16 to ad them...

I can't say the SFA method will work in KA but it might be worth checking.

Unless its just for personal use, on the slim chance it can be made to work it would be easier to distribute 1MB of text files than 3GB of movies.

IKR
I'll start with a text file, then we'll see.... I still need a player so that I can see, VRV stopped showing the video, only sound.

I did a very quick try on this and it might be possible. Have a look at the file below, that mess of crap at the bottom of the image is a subtitle. The reason it looks corrupted is due to what I believe is a fixable font issue. I used an SFA SFV file for testing, that text is supposed to say "I am Commandant Aex Rotherot:", the fact that KA is also aware enough of the subtitles to log them is encouraging.

The timestamps on the subtitle files are in frame numbers by the looks of it:
1901:I am Commandant Aex Rotherot:

If that subtitle starts at frame 1901 and KA movies run at 30fps/30fps-ish that would mean that specific subtitle shows at 63.36 seconds into the movie.

I will try to work on this a little, I should be able to put a small demo together.

https://ffmpeg.org/download.html - ffplay.exe will play MVE files just fine, just have to drag the file you want to play onto the ffplay.exe file.

I had a free hour last night so I thought I'd see if I could make any progress, as you can see from the image above I am slowly getting there.

There seems to be a combined font and palette issue, so there are some bugs to work out before this could be fully feasible. I'm not sure how much clearer I would be able to make that subtitle text either, if I recall correctly a side effect of the way that KA achieved higher resolutions means that the UI is stretched from 640x480 which causes some blurring.

Just a quick note to let you know I have not forgotten about this, I've been working on squashing a few final bugs with the movie installation and log viewer on the new launcher along with adding the new German translations from CISN_Destroyer.
